Butterflies are beautiful and have mystery, symbolism, and meaning and are a metaphor representing spiritual rebirth, transformation, change, hope, and life. The magnificent, yet short life of the butterfly closely mirrors the process of spiritual transformation and serves to remind us that life is short.

Butterflies are and will be an inexhaustible inspiration for artists. Today I present you a wonderful crocheted model, with the contribution of two creators: Tatyana Makarova (the designer of the gorgeous and well-known bunny) and @buba.toy who turned the bunny into a butterfly.

The clothing of the butterflies (dress and overalls) is not exactly like the one in the picture because there is only the pattern for the body. I tried to outline something nice. Of course, as usual, you can test your imagination and crochet in a different way than the one presented.

Materials:

  • Cotton yarn n° 5 (125m/50g) or acrylic yarn (150m/50g) in the desired colors
  • Hook 1.5 mm
  • Decorative button (1.5 cm diameter)
  • Wire for wings – thickness 0.5
  • Adhesive tape
  • Fiberfill
  • Tapestry needle for shape the face
  • Scissors
  • Point marker
  • Dry colors or makeup (for cheeks)
  • black half-beads  (10 mm diameter)
  • We decorate the wings with embroidery, beads, semi-beads, and so on to your taste

If you crochet with cotton the butterfly will have a height of about 24 cm.

Mark contraction points and places for the nose and eyebrows. Find Round 15 on the muzzle.

The 4sc between the increases are marked with blue dots on the photo below. Take them into account when placing pins.

Eyes – between Round 14 and 15, 10 sc between the eyes.

Nose – 6 sc in width and 2 rows in height – upper points are between Rounds 15 and 16.

Eyebrows – upper points are between Rounds 6 and 7, 7 sc between the brows.

How to make a contraction:

Insert the needle in one point and take it out the other. Take it back skipping one stitch. Draw and fix with a knot. You may repeat it one more time for better fixation. The points needed to be contracted are marked with numbers.

  1. Draw the points 1-3-4-2.
  2. Draw the points 2-5-6-1.
  3. Draw the points 2-7-8-1.
  4. Draw the points 4-7-8-3.
  5. Draw the points 4-5-6-3.
  6. Put the thread across the nose bridge from one eye to the other and draw a bit.
  7. Embroider a smile from one corner of the lips to the other and draw a bit. 8. Glue the eyes.

Embroidering a nose

Check that nose markings are in place after contractions. If needed correct them taking eyes into account.
Embroider the borderlines of the nose and embroider the first layer.
Don’t insert the needle into the toy, insert it only under the thread borderlines.
Don’t draw firmly. Check that the stitches are even.
Embroider the second horizontal layer.
Again don’t insert the needle into the toy, insert it only under the thread borderlines.
Embroider the third layer very neatly and evenly. Insert the needle into the toy right between the rows.
Make small stitches at nose corner and draw a bit to give it a nice shape. Fix the thread and hide the end inside the toy.
The nose is finished.
Embroider eyebrows and a mouth with black thread.
Tint the cheeks.

Sew the head to the body!
