NATIVITY SCENE – the sheep and the donkey – free crochet pattern

And on the third day after the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ, Mary went out of the cave, and, entering a stable, placed the child in a manger, and an ox and an ass adored him. Then was fulfilled that which was said by the prophet Isaiah, “The ox knows his owner, and the ass his master’s crib.” Therefore, the animals, the ox and the ass, with him in their midst incessantly adored him. Then was fulfilled that which was said by Habakkuk the prophet, saying, “Between two animals you are made manifest.”

Donkey  – 10 cm long and 11 cm high

MATERIALS:

• Cotton in the colors: white, pink, black and gray.
• 6 mm safety black eyes
• Hook n° 2.5
• Fiberfill

Head

(Start with white color yarn)

• 1: 6sc in MR
• 2: 6 inc  = 12
• 3: (1sc, inc)x 6 = 18
• 4: (2sc, inc)x 6 = 24
• 5: (3sc, inc)x 6 = 30
• 6-8: 30sc (3 rds)
• Change to gray color yarn!
• 9-11: 30sc (3 rds)
• 12: (3sc, dec)x 6 = 24
• 13-16: 24sc (4 rds)
• Insert the safety eyes between rows 10 and 11, with a distance between them of 5sc from the insertion point.
• 17: (2sc, dec)x 6 = 18
• 18:  (1sc, dec)x 6 = 12
• Stuff the head!
• 19: (1sc, dec)x 4 = 8 FO. Close the hole!

Embroider the eyes with white thread as in the photo.

Body

(gray color yarn)

• 1: 6sc in MR
• 2:6 inc  = 12
• 3:(1sc, inc)x 6 = 18
• 4:(2sc, inc)x 6 = 24
• 5-16: 24sc (12 rds)
• 17:(2sc, dec)x 6 = 18
• 18:(1sc, dec)x 6 = 12
• Stuff the body !
• 19:(1sc, dec)x 4 = 8 FO. Close the hole!

Legs (make 4)

(Start with black color yarn)

• 1: 5sc in MR
• 2: 5inc = 10
• 3: BLO 10sc
• Change to gray color yarn!
• 4-7: 9sc  (4 rds)
• 8: 1ch, turn, 4sc. FO. Leave a tail for sewing! Stuff the leg!

Ears (make 2)

(gray color yarn)

• 1: 4sc in MR
• 2: (1sc, inc)x 2 = 6
• 3: (2sc, inc)x 2 = 8
• 4-8: 8sc (5 rds) FO. Leave a tail for sewing!

Tail

(gray color yarn)

• 1: 4sc in MR
• 2-8: 4sc (7 rds)  FO. Leave a tail for sewing!

Pink part of the ears (make 2)

• (pink color yarn)
• 6ch and from the second ch from hook make 5sc. FO. Leave a tail for sewing. Sew it to the ear!

ASSEMBLY

Sew the head and the legs to the body as in the photo.

Sew the year to the head and the tail to the back on the body, 2 rows above the center.

Attach a few gray strands between the ears, and a few black strands to the tail.

Sheep – 10 cm long and 5 cm high

MATERIALS:

• 4 mm safety black eyes
• Hook n° 2.5
• Fiberfill

Head

(Start with skin color yarn)

• 1: 6sc in MR
• 2: 6 inc  = 12
• 3: (1sc, inc)x 6 = 18
• 4: (2sc, inc)x 6 = 24
• 5-10: 24sc (6 rds)
• Insert the safety eyes between rows 7 and 8, with a distance between them of 7sc from the insertion point.
• 11 : (2sc, dec)x 6 = 18
• 12 : 18sc
• Change to white color yarn (crochet only in back loop):
• 13: BLO 18sc 
• 14: BLO (1sc, dec)x 6 = 12
• Stuff the head!
• 15: BLO (1sc, dec)x 4 = 8 FO. Close the hole!

At rows 13, 14 and 15  of the head, in front loop,  crochet (white color yarn) from center: (1sc, 3ch, 1slst in the same stitch) – to the end, crocheting in a spiral.

Body

(white color yarn and crochet only in back loop )

• 1: 6sc in MR
• 2: BLO 6 inc  = 12
• 3: BLO (1sc, inc)x 6 = 18
• 4: BLO (2sc, inc)x 6 = 24
• 5-11: BLO 24sc
• 12: BLO (2sc, dec)x 6 = 18
• 13: BLO (1sc, dec)x 6 = 12
• Stuff the body !
• 14: BLO (1sc, dec)x 4 = 8 FO. Close the hole!

In the front loops left crochet from the center of end of the body: (1sc, 3ch, 1slst in the same stitch) – all the body, crocheting in a spiral.

Tail

(white color yarn)

• 1: 6sc in MR
• 2: (1sc, inc)x 3 = 9
• 3-4: 9sc  FO. Leave a tail for sewing!

Ears (make 2)

(skin color yarn)

• 1: 6sc in MR
• 2: (1sc, inc)x 3 = 9
• 3-6: 9sc  (4 rds) FO. Leave a tail for sewing!

Legs (make 4)

(skin color yarn)

• 1: 6sc in MR
• 2: (1sc, inc)x 3 = 9
• 3: BLO 9sc
• 4-6: 9sc  (3 rds) FO. Leave a tail for sewing! Stuff the leg!

ASSEMBLY

• Sew the head to the body.
• Sew the tail to the back of the body.
• Embroider the ears with pink color yarn, fold and sew a little at the end of the ear.

• Sew the ears to the head.
• Sew the legs to the body.
